I have used VirtualBox 4.2.12 to install Windows Server 2008 32-bit edition, and it installed fine. However, when I try to install Windows Server 2012 64-bit edition on my laptop, it comes up with an error, however on my desktop it is fine! I have allocated 2GB RAM and 64GB disk space. My laptop has 4GB RAM and 320GB disk space. Install and run Windows Server 2012 R2 VHD on Oracle VirtualBox. After downloading the Windows Server 2012 R2 VHD, you need to extract the it since you only need the VHD file only which can be found under the folder 'Virtual Hard Disks'. The Virtualbox supports importing the VHD files manually unlike its counterpart VMware Workstation.
Here is a list of virtual disk images available for VirtualBox: Windows 95 ('C' version) Notes: If you get a protection error, make sure your RAM is set between 100-200 MB, and then reset the virtual machine by going to Machine Reset. Windows Server 2012 states that Mainstream Support will be provided for five years, or for two years after the successor product (N+1, where N=product version) is released, whichever is longer. Microsoft will also provide Extended Support for the five years following Mainstream Support or for two years after the second successor product (N+2.
This tutorial will explain how to install Windows Server 2012 R2 in a virtual machine.
First, you need to have Windows Server 2012 R2 ISO file and VirtualBox installed.
Create a new virtual machine on VirtualBox by clicking on New. Select type and version of the virtual machine. In this case, Windows 2012 (64-bits).
Set the amount of memory (RAM). I selected 4096 MB (4 GB).
Create the virtual hard disk and set its size. I selected 40 GB.
When starting the virtual machine, you will be asked to select the ISO file. Select the Windows Server 2012 R2 ISO file.
The installation wizard will have been started. Select your language, time and keyboard input. Then, start the installation.
Select type of installation. In this case, Custom: Install Windows only (advanced). Hence, choose the partition to install windows and wait to finish the installation.
When finishing the installation, the virtual machine will be restarted. Then, type the administrator password and Windows Server 2012 R2 will be ready.

VirtualBox benefits
One of the main advantages of using VirtualBox is its versatility, as VirtualBox supports the maximum number of host and guest operating systems. For example, VirtualBox can be installed on Linux, Windows, Solaris, macOS and FreeBSD, and also can run virtual machines with Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, Novell Netware, and other operating systems.
For this reason, many users prefer the VirtualBox platform.
Operating systems suitable for VirtualBox
Here is a list of all operating systems that are supported by VirtualBox:

- Windows Server 2016

VirtualBox packages
Oracle VM VirtualBox is divided into the following packages:
The base package consists of all open-source components and is licensed under the GNU General Public License V2.
Extension packs are additional extension packs (filename .vbox-extpack.). They add functionality to the basic Oracle VM VirtualBox package. Here's what you can get added:
- USB 3.0 Virtual Device (xHCI), USB 2.0 (EHCI)
- Encryption of the disk image with the AES algorithm
- VirtualBox Remote Desktop Protocol (VRDP) support
- Host webcam pass-through
Installing these optional extension packs is very simple: double-click the package file and a wizard will guide you through the steps.
In the 'File' tab, click 'Settings' and in the Extensions category you can manage them (view, delete, etc.).
Issues you may have
You may get the message “VT-x is not available” when starting a 64-bit guest operating system. To prevent this, enable hardware virtualization features on the CPU (Intel VT-X or AMD-V) in the BIOS of your physical computer.
Also, you should be aware that Hyper-V will block hardware virtualization extensions. Therefore, if you are the owner of a Hyper-V, then you should first uninstall it.
VirtualBox tutorial: manage a VM
First, go to the VirtualBox website and download the VirtualBox installer.
After that, open it and start installing. The VirtualBox Installation Wizard will help you with this. You can put the Default icon next to the main installation components. Then click on the 'Install' button and wait for the end of this process.
Deploying a new virtual machine
After installation, open the application if it was not done in unattended mode. You can use both the graphical user interface, the command line interface, and VBoxManage. Next, download the Windows Server 2019 installer ISO image from the official Microsoft website. For example, this file will be named “WinServ 19.iso”.
Now begin creating a virtual machine:
Left-click on 'Machine', then click on 'Create'.
Define the main parameters:
Name: WinServ 19
Type: MS Windows
Version: Windows 2019 (64-bit)
Memory size: at least 8 GB of RAM
To create a hard disk, here's how to do it:
First, left-click on the 'Create' button and adjust the basic parameters:

- Name and file location for the virtual disk. The system partition is not suitable for storing virtual disks.
- The file size of the virtual disk. In this case, at least 50 GB.
- The file type of the hard drive. VirtualBox supports many virtual disk formats, but there is also a proprietary format called VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image).
After these steps, click “Create”, and the creation of the virtual machine will be completed after a while.
How to run VirtualBox
You can start the VM in one of the following ways:
- Double-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager window.
- In the VirtualBox Manager window, select the VM and click 'Start' at the top of the window.
- Through the home directory of the system user. Here, in the VirtualBox virtual machines folder, find the subdirectory of the machine you want to start. Now double-click the machine settings file (.vbox.) and the VM will start.
When you start a new virtual machine for the first time, the First Start Wizard will guide you. It will help you choose the installation media, and if your media is not listed, click the small folder icon next to the dropdown list; this is where you can select the image file on your drives.
Keep VMs safe with DiskInternals
If your virtual machine has an unexpected situation where .vmdk files are missing or deleted, you can restore them and rebuild the virtual machine using DiskInternals VMFS Recovery.
The program restores VMDK images on VMware vSphere, ESXi/ESX servers; VMFS disks stored on damaged and inaccessible hard drives remotely online (no shutdown required).
Any Windows restrictions are bypassed by the recovery process, and Unicode filenames and multilevel folders are supported. A step-by-step guide for data recovery using DiskInternals VMFS Recovery is included.
DiskInternals VMFS Recovery must be downloaded from the official website and then installed on your computer.
Connect via SSH. If there is no need for this, then proceed to the next step.
Open a disk (local disk or SSH connection).
After an in-depth scan, find the necessary .vmdk files and mount them.
Open the mounted .vmdk files and click the “View Files” button to check their integrity.The last step is to buy a license and a unique key to complete data export.
